    • Description: A talk by author/activist Peter Gelderloos on world governmental reactions to the reality of global warming, what scientists have been doing over the last 20 years, and how it is necessary to have a holistic approach to the problem of climate change. Outlining some of the false solutions pushed by more established environmental organizations, Gelderloos suggests decentralized organizing as a more appropriate strategy for dealing with the real problems created by climate change.
  • Jul 10: The Politics of Central Africa: Peter Erlinder
    • Description: Talk presented by William Mitchell College of Law professor Peter Erlinder and his Kenyan defense attorney, Gershom Otachi just after Erlinder's returning to Minnesota from a Rwandan jail. Erlinder outlines the context of the 1994 Rwandan Genocide and modern US involvement in Africa. Otachi discusses Erlinder's pending charges with the Rwandan government.   • Jun 30: Honduras After the Coup: The Resistance Continues
    • Description: June 28 was the 1st anniversary of the 2009 Honduran coup d'état which ousted elected President Manuel Zelaya and led to Pepe Lobo rising to power in Honduras. The coup seems to be a fait accompli, and Honduras is off the radar of many news watchers. Yet, average Hondurans still desire a return to democracy. We talk with Minnesota Hands Off Honduras Coalition organizers about the history of the original "banana republic", the context of the coup, and what people are doing locally to act in solidarity with the pro-democracy movement in Honduras.

  • Apr 29: Standing With Haiti
    • Description: In January, disaster hit the people of Haiti in epic proportion. A 7.0 quake cost an estimated 230,000 lives. With guests Laura Flynn of the Aristide Foundation and Rebecca Cramer of the Haiti Justice Committee, we go in-depth to provide historical context as to why the earthquake was so devastating. We talk about US-Haiti relations, relief efforts and current dangers facing the courageous people of Haiti. (4/10)
  • Apr 16: Walden Bello: Reconsidering Copenhagen and International Development
    • Description: Dr. Walden Bello may be the foremost public intellectual on Asian economics. The Economist magazine has credited Bello with creating the word "deglobalization", a concept that has put him in the front of a global movement to reconsider our identity as citizen, not as consumer. Bello opens by illuminating the backroom shenanigans at the COP 15 conference in Copenhagen. Bello "credits" the US, Canada and China as the main players in making last year's Copenhagen climate conference a failure. Bello particularly focuses on the narrative of China, which sees itself as a developing country, yet is now the second largest economy in the world. Bello concludes with an examination of what should be done to get out of this massive mess. (recorded in March @ the Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs).
  • Apr 03: Dhoruba Bin Wahad: US Imperialism and State Repression
    • Description: Former Black Panther Party organizer and political prisoner Dhoruba Bin-Wahad is an unapologetic radical. A target of the FBI's COINTELPRO, Dhoruba was arrested in 1971 and spent 19 years of a life sentence in jail for a crime he did not commit. Dhoruba argues that real change comes from dissent outside of the political system. Recognizing historic struggles against social injustice, Dhoruba connects the US role as an empire abroad with state repression, often in the form of laws, at home.

  • Mar 24: Gaza Freedom March: Minnesota Contingent
    • Description: As 2009 ended, 1400 people from more than 40 countries and across multiple identity lines gathered in Cairo, Egypt, with the intent to march in Gaza, Palestine. The activists and journalists went to help bring an end to the Siege of Gaza and draw attention to the occupation of Palestine. Among participants were 7 people from Minnesota. 4 Minnesotans speak about their experiences from their journey.

    • Description: William Mitchell College of Law professor Peter Erlinder is the lead counsel in the Military 1 Trial at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR). In a talk in Minneapolis, Erlinder outlines the history of international tribunals, projects the course of the International Criminal Court, analyzes the workings of the UN and discusses the context of both the 90 days that became known as the Rwandan Genocide AND the geopolitics of Central Africa.

  • Oct 07: What Explains US Policy in the Middle East: the Israel Lobby, Imperial Interests, or Both?
    • Description: in 2007, professors John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt published a groundbreaking book entitled, "The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy." the book opened a debate on how U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East is made. Twin Cities panelists professor August Nimtz, attorney Jordan Kushner and IJAN member Sylvia Schwarz articulate some of this important debate. hosted by the International Jewish anti-Zionist Network (IJAN-Twin Cities).

  • Aug 22: Jeremy Brecher - The Great Recession: Production for Use and Workers’ Responses to Today’s Hard Times
    • Description: Jeremy Brecher is an author/historian whose books include Strike!, Globalization from Below, and Global Village or Global Pillage. Brecher spoke at Macalester College in April, 2009 around a theme of "production for use" for today's economic hard times and environmental challenges. Q & A follows talk.
  • Aug 06: Wes Jackson: Greening the Economy, Preparing for the End of Growth
    • Description: Co-founder of the Land Institute in Kansas and named by Rolling Stone magazine as one of the top 100 people changing America, Wes Jackson keynotes the 2009 MN Chapter of the Society for Conservation Biology's annual meeting. Jackson thinks that the way the people of the world are fed can and should be more sustainable. Jackson is working to transform staples like wheat, sunflower and sorghum into perennial crops, eliminating the need for plowing and replanting, and minimizing the use of fertilizers. Farms can be transformed from industrial factories into natural ecosystems. 1 hour, 14 minutes.

  • Jul 17: George Galloway: Viva Palestina!
    • Description: Ahead of a second historic humanitarian aid convoy bound for Gaza, British Member of Parliament George Galloway recently spoke in the Twin Cities. In the talk, Galloway shared his experiences from his first trip to Gaza. In early 2009, as the bombs were still falling on Gaza, Galloway organized a humanitarian convoy. In just five weeks, Galloway pulled together 107 vehicles, 255 people and $2 million of aid. Starting in Britain and driving through France, Spain and North Africa, the aid convoy arrived in Gaza to tumultuous acclaim. Aiming to be the biggest single aid effort for Palestine from the US, Galloway is now heading a second convoy (which at this writing just arrived in Gaza). Opening the talk are the event co-sponsors: American Muslims for Palestine and the Al Aqsa Institute.

  • Jun 02: MOVE: Ramona Africa, part 2 - from the Hallie Q. Brown Center
    • Description: in 1985, the Philadelphia police department dropped a bomb on the home of Ramona Africa's family, massacring 11, including 5 children. Ramona, a member of the MOVE organization, was the sole adult survivor of the incident. Ramona talks more about MOVE and critiques "the system." filmed by Eric Angell in April, 2009.

    • Description: on May 13, 1985, the Philadelphia police department massacred 11 members of Ramona Africa's family, including 5 children, by dropping a bomb on their home.   • May 15: MOVE: Confrontation in Philadelphia
    • Description: a fast-paced, independently created documentary film of the events in the late seventies which lead up to the Philadelphia police arrest of members of MOVE, a radical mostly black commune. the video journalists reveal the complex relationship of media bias, police harassment, and subtle economic motivation in the violent removal of MOVE.
  • May 11: Parallel Injustices: American Indians and Palestinians
    • Description: At an amazing gathering, for the first time in Minnesota, Native Americans and Palestinians publicly shared their respective experiences of dispossession of their land and genocide of their people. Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) National Director Nihad Awad and American Indian Movement (AIM) leader Clyde Bellecout speak at Augsburg College. Dr. Khalidi is considered to be one of the foremost U.S. historians of the modern Middle East.

Although the RNC is history, there are several outstanding cases that are still proceeding through the system including the high profile case of the RNC 8. Hosted by Eric Angell.
  • Mar 05: The Green Scare: Civil Liberties Post 9/11
    • Description: What is the Green Scare? Most everyone has heard of the Red Scare. In a talk given at the U of M, award-winning independent journalist Will Potter makes the case that animal rights and environmental (green) activists are the most recent targets of government repression via new \"anti-terrorism\" laws. Potter is an authority on the use of these new laws to silence political activists post-9/11. Potter\'s writing on the topic was recognized by Project Censored as one of the top twenty censored stories of 2008. Includes Q & A. (total run time 96 minutes).

  • Feb 26: RNC 8 Town Hall Gathering
    • Description: Eight people organizing dissent around the 2008 Republican National Convention were \"pre-emptively\" targeted by the Ramsey County Sheriff prior to the RNC. The \"RNC 8\" face serious charges including \"Conspiracy to Riot in the Furtherance of Terrorism\" and are believed to be the first people to be charged under the state of Minnesota\'s version of the USA Patriot Act. This town hall gathering is a community response to the authorities conduct.
  • Feb 10: What Does Justice Look Like?
    • Description: Guest Waziyatawin, Dakota author and scholar of indigenous peoples\' history, describes some of the key events around the founding of the state of MN 150 years ago. With an important narrative, Waziyatawin shares the struggles of the Dakota people to retain their lives, land and identity and gives an indigenous perspective on the current environmental crisis.   • Feb 03: Police Brutality: From the RNC to Everyday Life
    • Description: Guest Michelle Gross, President of the MN-based Communities United Against Police Brutality shares the word from the streets and neighborhoods of the Twin Cities. From cop behavior in St. Paul during the RNC and the increase in cop usage of new \"less lethal\" weapons to hate crimes being carried out by police relating to the election of President Barack Obama, Ms. Gross lays out reason for us to keep a closer eye on police behavior.     • Description: A secular Jew (and eco-socialist), Joel Kovel is a great American thinker and author of many books. Once a practicing psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, Kovel is now a Professor of Social Studies at Bard College in NY. Kovel\'s 2007 book, \"Overcoming Zionism\", was briefly banned due to its critique of Israel. In late 2008 Joel Kovel visited the Twin Cities and spoke about \"Overcoming Zionism\" and the struggle to get these ideas out to the U.S. public. Includes Q and A.
  • Jan 17: Robert Meeropol: Guilt By Association
    • Description: Meeropol, the son of Ethel and Julius Rosenberg, spoke recently in St. Paul. The Rosenbergs were Communists executed by the US government during the Red Scare for \"conspiracy to commit espionage\". New records have recently been released to the public regarding the most important trial of the Cold War. Meeropol relates how the case relates to our society today.
